We’re all busy- whether it’s the holiday season, you’re busy at work, or whether you’re making up another excuse, it’s certain that if you put your mind to it, you could take an extra day on either side of the weekend, and have a little getaway that’s sure to hold you off until you’ve got time for a proper vacation.

Taking a short break will give you a reprieve and a little bit of excitement, and will certainly allow you to let loose, and relax in a way you probably can’t at home.  Whatever your excuse, here are some of the many reasons to get away to the Netherlands this year:

Getting There

Getting to Amsterdam is both inexpensive, and easy.  Starting at just £29, it is possible to get transportation from the London City Center to Amsterdam’s city center within 6 hours or so.  With that said, you can, of course, cut down your travel time significantly by flying, and can even find some really incredible deals online for last-minute flights to Amsterdam.

Check or cheaptickets.comand set a flight alert to tell you when your flight prices tend to be lowest. Another great option is to consider booking an Amsterdam Break with Thomas Cook– all of your holiday necessities wrapped into one, incredibly affordable package.  Check out for more information.

Day Trips

Amsterdam has a plethora of activities to suit every travelers’ need.  Perhaps you’re looking to get some sunshine and exercise?  Take a sunny bike ride through the countryside dotted with windmills and tulip fields (you can even pack a lunch and make a day of it!). Or take a walk through the city- check out the historical monuments, museums, bakeries, and architecture. Often referred to as the Venice of the North, Amsterdam has a ‘canal ring’ right through the center of the city.  Here you can take a relaxing and informative boat ride upon your arrival to familiarize yourself with the city.

Night Life

If you’re more into the dining and night life, you’re in for a treat– Amsterdam offers a wide array of fine dining and street food, night clubs and pubs.  Some of the best weekend stories come from making no plans, and seeing where the infamous Amsterdam leads you.

Just make sure to have someone with you who can navigate your way home after a night on the town; the last thing you want is to be inebriated and lost in a back alley in an unknown city. You could spend a month-long holiday in Amsterdam, and still not see all the sights.  Now is the time to start as the sheer accessibility to Amsterdam leaves no excuse not to head there once a year, or even more frequently, if you can swing it!
