While many view Hawaii as a destination for luxury travel, the truth is, it can be extremely affordable. Especially for travel around the Big Island, there are tons of tips, tricks and cheap restaurants to keep costs extremely low and still throw yourself into everything the island has to offer. If your looking for ways to fund your travel, there can be tons of ways like this one. If you’re planning your next trip to Hawaii, here’s how to keep it cheap!

Hitchhiking

While hitchhiking can be dangerous, on the Big Island it is extremely common and accepted. Everyone seems to be doing it from solo females and groups of travelers to locals just trying to get to work. Always use caution and your best judgment but definitely utilize this free means of transportation.

Take Advantage of Outdoor Activities

The Big Island has no shortage of paid activities and excursions. Snorkeling adventures, boat tours and animal encounters are all available for a fee. However, you can just as easily head to any beach or bay, grab a $6 snorkel from a local store and explore on your own. Try looking for turtles, dolphins, coral reefs and manta rays all on your own.

Get Free Samples

There are free samples all over the island! From coffee tastings and flavored macadamia nuts to toffee and candies, there are plenty of shops that give out a taste of the island flavors for free.

Take Free Tours

There are coffee plantations, bee keepers and fruit farms all over the island that offer free tours to visitors. Drop by Big Island Bees to watch the bee keeping process, learn about collecting honey and taste a variety of flavors all for no cost. Plus, there are hoards of coffee plantations like Greenwell Farms and Hula Daddy that will take you on a tour of the farms and to watch the coffee making process.

Don’t let tales of expensive excursions around Hawaii put you off. There are plenty of ways to explore, discover and dig into the culture without breaking the budget!
