If you are planning any type of trip to Swansea, here are a few important facts to consider about Swansea itself so you can see just how interesting of a place it can be:

  • A Viking Trading Post – Archaeologists have discovered that the area of Swansea was likely a Viking trading post in earlier times. Many relics have been discovered along the Gower Peninsula area that date back to the Iron Age and Stone Age. The area is thought to have been the home of both the Romans and the Norse early on and the name Swansea actually derives from a Norse are known as Sveinn’s Island.

  • An Important Industrial Area – During the surge of the Industrial Revolution, Swansea was a very important port for all kinds of industries. Not only was the area considered a hub for transportation and trading, but industries like coal and copper found homes in Swansea, causing the population to explode in the early to mid-1800s. At one point the population of Swansea was larger than that of Cardiff, currently the most populated city in Wales.
  • Rebuilding after World War II – While the city itself is old, many of the buildings and areas of Swansea needed to be rebuilt and refurbished after being decimated during World War II. The bombings during the war destroyed many of the historical areas found in the current city centre, there are still remnants of Swansea Castle and many areas have built up around the area over the last fifty to sixty years.
  • Home of Dylan Thomas – Swansea is noted for many things, including being the birthplace and longtime home of the famous poet Dylan Thomas. Thomas was born in Swansea and spent over twenty years living in the area and produced a large portion of his published poetry and works during his life here. A memorial exists to him within the city and can be found at Cwmdonkin Park.
