A new piece of research by a UK based online travel agency has demonstrated the things that people would be willing to give up for the rest of their lives in order to be able to continue to go on holiday. It showed that people attach so much importance to their holidays that they would rather give up carbohydrates, sex, and even their best friends. Additionally, the research revealed 91% of British people could not imagine never going on holiday again.
A recent study has revealed just how much a holiday abroad is a priority to the average British person. The study looked at the things people would be willing to give up for life so that they would be able to continue to go on holiday.
It looked specifically at elements normally classed as important, including food, technology, and friends. Through the study, it was shown that people would be willing to give up their mobile phone for life if it meant they were able to continue to go on holiday.
A UK based online travel agency, Sunshine.co.uk, has been conducting an ongoing piece of research into the holiday habits of British people. For this element of their study, they polled 2,936 British adults. They came from a range of different places across the country and were all at least 18 years old. The study was conducted anonymously, in an attempt to encourage people to answer all questions truthfully.
At the start of the survey, participants were provided with a list and asked to indicate the things they would be willing to give up for the rest of their lives so that they would continue to be able to enjoy holidays. Through the different responses, Sunshine was able to compile a list of the top 10 things that people would be able to give up. The results showed that:
- 91% of people would be willing to give up carbohydrates.
- 72% of people would be willing to give up sex.
- 52% of people would be willing to give up their best friend.
- 51% of people would be willing to give up their mobile phone.
- 45% of people would be willing to give up the internet.
- 43% of people would be willing to give up their career.
- 39% of people would be willing to give up alcohol.
- 27% of people would be willing to give up their driving license.
- 15% of people would be willing to give up their relationship.
- 13% of people would be willing to give up television.
One of the things that stood out is that the research suggests more people would be willing to sacrifice their best friends for the rest of their life, than they would be willing to give up television, so long as they would get holidays in return.
This did lead to a secondary question being ‘Can you imagine your life without any holidays in it?’. To this, 91% of participants answered ‘no’.
It was also shown that 73% of those answering the questions would go on holiday at least once a year. Additionally, 63% said that if they did not have plans for a holiday abroad, they would feel ‘miserable’.
Chris Clarkson, Managing Director of sunshine.co.uk, said the following:
“Holidays are a big part of people’s lives and having one to look forward to is, without a doubt, one of the best feelings. However, I was really surprised at just how many people said they’d rather give up their best friend, their relationship or their career for the rest of their lives than holidays!
“Personally, I can’t imagine going the rest of my life without another holiday abroad; it’d just be too sad an existence! However, I’m not so sure I’d be able to give up many of the things in the top 10 either… this is a tough one!”
