Travel Photo of the Day:

Norfolk  Seals enjoying the beach at Horsey Gap, Norfolk. UK… Not far from where we call home! This seal is a baby one, it wasn’t bothered by me poiking a camera at it at all.

Very nice picture! Looks like you got pretty close to the baby seal

    • Yeah I did, it didn’t care at all… It’s mother however was a different story!

It’s a lovely photo, Aaron, and I’ve just been thinking of going to see the baby seals at Horsey Gap myself, this glorious sunny winter morning – but looking for info about them on the internet, I’ve just read of wildlife wardens asking people to keep away from them – they’ve seen mother seals abandoning their young when humans have come too close, and the babies then dying. Once the baby seals are older, the warden says it’s ok to come within 50-100 metres of them because they can follow their mothers into the sea, but for the first few weeks they can’t swim, and are completely dependant on their mothers – they die if left alone. I am sure you didn’t wish this baby seal any harm, but you say the mother was distressed … I’m going to search for my binoculars before setting out. I know I’d have wanted to get close to them too, but after reading this I realise I should stay at least 100 metres away. Best wishes, Mary

  • this picture really show’s that naturalist …..
