A journey in Pictures: Jungle Trekking in Chiang Mai. Taken while backpacking around Thailand on a budget. The first in a series of Travel pictorials... Mucho Mucho Love... Come Join In.

This is the first in a new Photo Essay series I’m going to be doing. I’ve got literally thousands of travel pictures rotting away in my albums and I feel it’s time to breathe some life into them, I’ll be uploading the large size pictures.

Aaron and Georgie tackle the 12 hour slog from Chiang Mai to Bangkok then hit the shops with a vengeance Mucho Mucho Love... Come join In

Here we are again in Bangkok more specifically the Khao san road… With our new slimmer bags packed we were picked up from our guest house in Chiang Mai on the dot of 6:30 and we had spent all day dreading the 12hr journey and preparing for it in any way we could. This included downloading podcasts, (BBC radio shows) buying books and magazines, anything to try and break it up a little. Once on the bus we put to ease a little because it was the first night bus in Thailand with proper reclining seats, not all the way back but as good if not a little better than on a plane. We had one scheduled stop at a midnight café for food and drinks and one when the driver needed a wee but apart from that it was go go go. The distractions we had spent the day accumulating were life savers and we were soon at the rest stop, cigarettes were rolled with lightning speed and in a vain atemp to get some kip we even bought little cartons of chilled ovaltine. At the stop several busses rolled in just after us and on one was a couple called Mark and Sheena we had met in the sailing club in Nha Trang, Vietnam, also going to Bangkok… We had a little chin wag as best we could under the circumstances and decided to meet up at some point for a few beers in Bangkok. Then came the secret weapon… In Vietnam and especially Cambodia the bus journeys are a killer and the pharmacies are very easy going and whilst in Vietnam we had purchased a pack of sleeping pills, never really had the need to use them but because our time in Thailand is drawing to a close we didn’t want to waste a day laying in our rooms trying to wrestle back a bit of sleep we poped one each and got back on the bus. Some of the roads in Thailand are pretty rough and team that with a pretty old bus with minimal to no suspension it sounds like some one is firing an anti aircraft gun in the toilet below every time we come to a pot holed stretch of tarmac. As we layed as stretched out as we could deperately willing ourselves to sleep listening to the racket below the sleeping tablets kicked in and 6 hurs later we woke up as the bus was entering Bangkok, the sun was rising and the sky was pink and the best thing about it was we both felt pretty alright and had managed a fair bit of sleep. We were dropped off at one end of the Khao san road at 6:30ish and took a gentle hike down the infamous street towards the Siam Oriental hotel, our usual hang out when we are in Bangkok. It nice going back to a place and when we do we always stay in the same guest house or hotel if we can and if it was ant good because it’s one of the few opportunities we get to have a slice of the fimiliar. It was encouraging to see the usual assortment of casualties, drunk people still singing and whailing, Thais asleep on the floor after one too many and rubbish being hurriedly swept up by masked council workers befor the next day and the next plane load arrive. We checked in to a simple but tidy room, laid on the beds hoping for a tiny bit more sleep and the next thing we knew it was 10:30 and we had been out like lights for 4 more hours. Feeling very refreshed with a good nights sleep behind us we set about doing what we came here for… This time it was shopping… again! We headed off to Central world a sprawling new shopping complex in the heart of the new Siam square district, eveything is flashy everything is shiny and it is a million miles away from the craziness of the Khao san road. On arrival we stumbled across an outdoor stage being erected and much security loitering around, turns out that for the next 4 days its Elle fasion week in Bangkok! We descended on the shops with as much gusto as we could muster and by the time we left we must have walked close to a marathon but the place is so massive that we bareley scratched the surface, we will of course return today in the evening mainly to take a look-see at whats going on but we do have unfinished business there because this is the last time we will be in Bangkok long enough to do anything before we jet off to Dubai with mummy and daddy. By the time we were back down the Khao san road it was late and after the mandatory stroll up and down we turned in.

We rectify the mistake on Georgie's visa, post stuff home and then crack on with the sunday walking street market in Chiang MaiMucho Mucho Love... Come join In

Sunday in Chiang Mai found us in limbo as to book an elephant adventure or not. The problem we had was thus… We didn’t want to turn up and see some lovely old smelly Ellies getting mistreated… But we also didn’t want to pay the rather large fee to a specialist company who keep their rescued ‘phants as wild as can be. Its a tough cookie and based on the fact we have done some ele-fun recently we decided against it, save our dosh for a rainy day or something along those lines at least. So with most of the day behind us we did what everyone does on a Sunday in Chiang Mai… Sunday walking street, AKA a market. Although I wasn’t too fused as Georgie had a reason to be there not to just look at every single thing she passed as usual. I also took the camera along to keep me interested because lately with my spare time (toilet time) I have been boning up on how to actually use a camera and the walking street was the perfect place to have a little practice. We glided quite painlessly through the brightly lit stalls and busy streets that Georgie hadn’t already trawled on our last visit to a small street lined with awesome book shops we had missed up to this point. The third and last of the absolutely bursting shops was owned by a slightly sarcastic and short Irish man who liked to make short sharp impersonations of our accents as we browsed. It wasn’t until we left that I mentioned to Georgie how much like a scene from Dylan Moran’s Black Books it was… Back at the remainder of the stalls that make up the bright and lively walking street to solider on with the trademark Georgie market sweep mathod, as we came to the end and were making our way back to our guesthouse a make up stall caught Georgies eye and just when I thought we had escaped she proceeded to get truly stuck in… Huraah… Today Chiang Mai immigration was open and we were up in good time to see Thailands beurocracy in full swing. To be fair apart from several unnecessary trips to the photo copier shed a good 20 yards away it was a pretty painless morning, the staff were nothing but helpful and the forms were pretty straight forward. Although the visa extension queue looked alot more stressfull and painfully slow. We left with an ammended visa stamp as planned although I am jealous about it because now Georgie has one that I will probably never get. Then on to our second task of the day, the post office, which also panned out to be a piece of piss. We were in and out within half an hour and even had our 12kg parcel expertly wrapped by a very cheerful clerk. The last task of the day which has taken most of it has been to sort out where we are headed to next… And more importantly, how. It seems everyone wants to use the sleeper train when ever we do so its back to the good old night bus, not like the sleeper buses of Vietnam where they at least attemp to provide you with a bed, here the fact the bus runs through the night is the sole reason its called a sleeper but with time slipping away we need to get on the road again. After much deliberation, several iced coffee’s and a little nap we arrived at the descision of Koh Tao… A small island famed for its cheap scuba diving courses and lush nearby coral reefs, its just north of Koh Phagnan and somewhere we haven’t been yet so we thought its a perfect starting place and if we don’t like it… We can easily move on. It probably doesn’t sound manic or confusing but today has deffinately been just that but once again we have a plan, it will probably go to shit very soon but at least we tried! We were also planning to stop a few days in the mighty Bangkok before catching our flight to Dubai, but instead now we are going to stop there on our way to Koh Tao in a few days, mainly to break up the bus journeys and also because its been a while since we have been there… And we both love it so…

Chiang Mai Chiang Mai… We have returned to the Bangkok of the north for a few technical reasons as opposed to the usual hedonistic ones, firstly Georgie was given the wrong entry stamp when we passed through immigration from Hanoi by a bungling immigration officer, secondly her bag was so massive that for the sake of her back we need to post a box home. Obviously we fully intend to make the most of our stay here and partake in some sort of fun escapades. Yesterday… Also known as Saturday was our first real day back in the lovely city of Chiangers and we spent a large portion of it discovering that immigration doesn’t open until Monday and the post office shuts by midday, but on a lighter note I have managed to pick up a few books (both Michael Palin) for our forth-coming beach bummery… With the rest of our day we meandered from place to place re-acquainting ourselves with the city. Very close by the Same Same guest-house where we are staying is a second hand denim shop selling some pukka things, they also have one of tiniest stupid little dogs I have ever laid eyes on which Georgie loves… And… And one of the largest cats I have ever laid eyes on, almost the size of a lion cub! But alas the two are friends and we didn’t see the cat eat the tiny yappy dog called Tinkerbell. We managed to lay our hands on a cardboard box and began the laborious task of sorting through Georgies clothes mountain to pick things to send home this task is still unfinished but we are half way there and that’s a serious achievement! Somehow in the evening we ended up back at the night bazaar again!…

Our last days in the beautiful Pai were also our last with Kat… for now. We woke up all a bit worse for wear after our night at the don’t cry bar, I was first up and made the short but painful crawl to reception down our shady path to reception on a coffee quest. Georgie was still well out of it and there were no signs of Kat either which made my task easier. Although the gravel path and morning small talk to the lovely Thai lady who runs the show were challenging enough especially because I hadn’t yet had a cigarette. It was well into the PM side of things when everyone was up, showered and ready for food and the day seemed hotter than usual… Definately not what we needed so over breakfast via a series of grunts and moans we made a plan for the day to retire yet again to the hamock clad communal area of the Sun huts guesthouse. Books, Ipods and whaterver else we needed to pass the time loaded into the tiny boots of the mopeds and off we scooted. We spent the rest of the afternoon there drifting in and out of sleep, heads in books bareley saying a word just lounging good and proper. A dog belonging to the owner mooched into the shady pagoda where we were all sitting, climbed down into the fire pit… Obviously unlit! And with a huff and a puff crashed to the ground and fell fast asleep, it completely summed up how we were all feeling. The day seemed somehow to be getting hotter and the moskitos turned their persistent attention on me… Sweaty, hot and bothered old me. They rarely actually bite me because when they land on me it tickles so much as they scramble through my leg hair to get to the skin that I notice and swat them away… They are more like an annoying uncle that is convinced you enjoy being tickled when its crystal clear you really don’t and all it makes you want to do is scream “FUCK OFF” at the top of your voice in his face… Obviosly thats exactly what I did to the moskitos but they didn’t seem to understand and all hot and bothered, we all headed back to our guesthouse for a shower as the sun was on its way down behind the nearby hills and the day finally started to cool off. Before dinner we managed to pull ourselves together enough to buy our bus tickets back to Chiang Mai for the next day and get some dinner into us at a healthy food place. By now it was dark and the evening was getting on so we went back to the don’t cry bar for more drinks with the bunch of wicked people we met the night before. Kat had an early bus ticket booked ond only stayed for one drink but we never buy early tickets if we can help it for the obvious reason that Georgie loves to sleep, so we stayed with our new pals and got stuck right in to a pretty heavy night on the cheap cocktails and whiskey. At around 5:30am one of the lads we were with decided that it was time for bed and seeing that at 7:30 he had to be up for a day white water rafting we all agreed and headed off. As we were leaving Georgie and I were called back to the bar by our friend and barman Monkey and he had overheard it was our last night and in way of thanks for our patronage poured two almighty tequila slammers and a cocktail each… This was the exact opposite of what I wanted and Georgie went green at the mere sight of the shots… But they were a gift of appreciation and we regretfully but politely threw them back. Spent the next 5 minutes trying to keep it down. Then we sat around the fire with the owners and the bar staff chatting away about the beautiful Pai and Thailand in general, although Georgie was distracted with trying not to throw up and I had to do my best alone to polish off both cocktails while our generous hosts looked on… To top it off I hate Gin and thats exactly what they poured Georgie! I managed it in a lowly half an hour by which point we were falling to pieces so we said our goodbyes and litterally hobbled back to bed as the sun was well up and the day had started to warm. What seemed like a few minutes later but actually an hour or two, Kat burst in to say her goodbyes… As we had asked her to do earlier but bless her the best she got was a smelly hug and a grunt before we both slumped back to sleep. Again it was probably closer to the evening than the morning when I made the mornig coffee run and again the small talk and gravel path slightly got the better of me. We had missed our bus in a quite epic way but that was the last thing we had on our minds! We found the nearest place that served something similar to a good old fry up and plonked down in a shady corner, scoffed some grease and took a while to get used to being alone once again. Its always really fun and refreshing to meet up with people and travel for a while with them, but its always really nice when we are alone again too… Alot like a normal holiday abroad, its wonderful to get there and have fun or relax but its also always nice to get home again afterwards. We headed a short way to the best internat cafe we have ever stepped foot in with a plan of doing sweet F.A. for the rest of the day and seeing every computer is equiped with a super compfy reclining armchair it was the perfect place to do it. Not long after we made ourselves at home a massive rain storm pelted down the street outside, it has been months since we have seen rain like that and luckily it lasted most of the day so we couldn’t feel guilty for wasting a day watching Top Gear on the internet. After another fry up for dinner we were all set to head back to the Don’t cry bar and meet up with our chums again… And this time we were deffinately leaving the following day so after another heavy night and over another table heaving with empty glasses we said our goodbyes again to our friends and the staff and this time headed for the Seven Eleven for some Mama cups (pot noodles) before hitting the hay just as the sky was begining to wake up. We are now back in Chiang Mai… Again we were up late and again the coffee run proved challenging. But we had checked out of the superb Evergreen guesthouse, returned our moped, had a fry up and were waiting for the bus all by 2pm. The bus ride back was pretty ok, despite one chap having perhaps the worst B.O. we have ever been subjected to and a crying baby but we had a menthol inhaler and earphones… Getting good at this! At a stop halfway between Pai and Chiang Mai actually called the halfway stop another bus pulled in going the other way and a young chap climbed out sporting an Ipswich town shirt, Georgie leaned over and asked if what she saw was what she saw, I said yes and then she pelted him with footie abuse.. All in good humour of course but still a strange thing to see in the heart of the north of Thailand. It turns out he is a long term traveller and interested in becoming a buddhist. We arrived back in Chian Mai and the Same Same guesthouse a little after 6:30 and by the time we had checked in the last few days caught up with us and so I still lay where I fell but Georgie made it downstairs to the local internet café to look at wedding stuff…

We get on two wheels to explore Pai and end up making a splash at Mo Paeng waterfalls Mucho Mucho Love... Come join In

I think we have been in Pai now for nearly a week, its the kind of place where doing absolutely nothing feels like your doing something. It has such a laid back feel to it that simply popping out of town on one occasion seems to take most of the day. The day after we got absolutely plastered in the Ting Tong bar we litterally did nothing but mooch about the town and ended up at the opening party for the Pai Post art gallery / bar, a jazz cafe sort of place playing some wicked music and the only place that seemed busy in all of Pai at that time of night. The days following that have been spent in much the same way, we attempted to go back to the lush waterfall we had visited a few days earlier but its right at the base of the nearby mountaind and clinging to the top were huge dark clouds that were spilling rain and blocking the sun so we stopped at a local cafe to decide on another place to go only to discover the place was like a movie called wrong turn. We were served by a small chap who comunicated mostly with grunts dressed as a little girl, even as far as bright pink fingernails. Of course not one of us said a thing even when he pointed things out on the menu with his beautifully painted 6th finger… We drank up and backed cautiously out of the cafe past the fella’s bicycle and were quicky off back towards the town. We ended up again at the Pai Post for another evening of soothing jazz while sipping some beers, nothing heavy and another day had slipped us by. Every day has been the same. We found a nice quiet guesthouse up on a hill just outside Pai called Sun Huts and there they had hamocks and day beds a plenty so on a day where we had been rained off we decided to fetch our books there and swing another day away. Yesterday though we had a triumph, we managed to make it to the Pai Hot springs, about 8km out of town on the mopeds and I personally have never seen one. It didn’t occur to us for a second that they were actually going to be HOT! They are sat inside a national park which itself is quite a beatuful place although because its low season we were just about the only people there. So we stripped down to our skinny’s and slowly edged into one of the pools created by the springs further up, in this climate we could only bear it for 10 minutes or so and it was a very strange feeling to get out and cool off in the heat of the day. Afew local women dressed in some sort of hill tribe clobber strolled past with a bag of eggs seconds after I had piped up and said I reckon we could boil eggs in here and they waved us to follow, so we followed the women past the series of pools up to where they appear from the ground from two main bubbling, steaming eggy smelling pools where they all stooped around and ploped in their eggs, the sign read… No swim 80 degrees. We sat and chatted with the women for a while then said goodbye and left them chasing their eggs around the stinky pool. The next and last pool along was clearly the hottest one and even had a sign beside it saying… No boil egg. But by now the stench of sulphur was too much and we headed back to town refreshed form our mineral bath only to be pelted with rain as we did so. The rain hang around for most of the afternoon so we found a little place to watch a movie untill we caught a glimpse through the window of a spankingly gorgeous sunset. We hopped on our bikes once more and raced up a nearby hill to a bar called Darling viewpoint with some pretty special views of Pai below framed by the hills behind which make up not only the Thai – Burma border but are also so im told the foothills of the Himalayas, all playing second fiddle to an intensley dramatic sky of pinks, oranges and distant lightning on an epic scale. After sunset as we headed back to town to get changed and have some dinner we past a really nice looking bar with a big bonfire and cool music called the Don’t cry bar… Not sure what the name means but after dinner we ended up there only to find that even in the hight of low season this was one of the few bars that had a descent number of other travellers and Thai holiday makers knocking about so thats where we stayed… Until a nagging stomach upset that I had had since dinner became too much and with a few beers inside me too I hunched back to our room to curl up on the bed while the girls had a massage… Finally yesterday we made it to Mo Paeng waterfall before the rain, it was an obsurdly hot day and we all seemed to be on the go slow so a cool refreshing dip was exactly what we needed, so we spent the day splashing in the cool sparkling waters and lounging in the bubbling pools… The exact opposite to England, instead of a nice hot tub on a cold day we had a nice cold tub on a hot day. Its a beautiful spot there and by the time the sun was beggining to set we still there enjoying it. A short stroll around the town again just to make sure the girls haven’t missed a single item and along the way I spotted some tisue paper lanterns, the kind we had on Koh Samui where they are alot like hot air ballons which you light a small ring of card inside and as it fills the lantern with hot air it lifts off and floats away for miles until all you can see is tiny flickering light like a slow shooting star. We bought one each and let them fly from a bridge between town and the Don’t cry bar where we were heading. They attracted the attention of several passers by who all stopped to wath them slowly float off into the distant stary sky and one informed us that at new years in Pai which is at the height of high season everyone in town, tourists and locals alike set tens of thousands off all night long and they said it’s one of the most amazing sights they’ve ever seen. We were mezermerized enough by our 3 floating away on the breeze but if we are ever near here for new years then we will deffinately have to come and see that! We ended the night up at the Don’t cry bar and met a bunch of other really nice travellers fresh off a 2 day white water rafting tour, had plenty to drink and then staggered back to our huts…
