Otres beach Sihanoukville

As you may or may not know we did eventually come to a decision about what we were going to do – either stay in Sihanoukville with all our mates and work on Koh Ru or go back to the UK… Well we are going home!

It was the sensibly choice really (not that we really do sensible) and a few things swayed it for us, if it hadn’t been such a quiet low season and we could have got more work then we would have probably stayed but as it is – there wasn’t and we’re not. So if your reading this from the UK then see you soon!!! (more…)

Sihanoukville or bust…

Thanks a lot

Life in Sihanoukville is going pretty good, we have been struggling with plans on what to do next and it’s been hanging over us for a while now but finally we have some stuff set in stone. The very very original plan from way back when was always to end up here in Sihanoukville and try to find some work… But of course that all changed all over the place. With all sorts of ideas flying around somehow we have managed to come full circle and ended where we planned to – in Sihanoukville (more…)

Georgie and Toby at Independance Beach, Sihanoukville

With almost a week of Sihanoukville monkey business now behind us it feels like we never really left. The days following our glorious return were spent out on the very fine and well kept Independence beach, although it’s technically a private beach owned by a very flashy hotel we have never had to pay to use it and we never get any hassles there either.

The nights however were a different story – beer fueled rampages, tower after tower of Anchor beer and for Toby a couple more nights sat around the blackjack table. Georgie and I left the casino to Toby and a few other people we have met and instead soaked up that Monkey Republic atmosphere we have been so very addicted to. (more…)

Back in Sihanoukville… Back in Monkey Republic… Back in the game.

The Sihanoukville Monkey bunch

With all the constant moving from place to place over the last week it’s a big relief to finally get back to a place where we can dwell for a week… Or two… Monkey Republic!

With the night at the casino behind us we sorted out tickets down to Sihanoukville for the same day, packed up and checked out. It was a scorching hot day in Phnom Penh, by far the hottest I’ve ever been in my life and of course the bus was running late… Huddled together in the shade pouring sweat from places we didn’t know we had – dreaming of getting back to the beach was all that kept me standing.

We had a nice bus, not VIP but plenty good enough and the six hours passed in no time. Excitement about seeing the Monkey bunch again set in as we started to make our way into Sihanoukville as did the feeling of being somewhere where everybody knows your name. (more…)

Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh

The day after the party and ours was the last bus to leave at 12pm we thought it best to go with the later one and at least attempt to get a few hours of sleep. We rolled into the bar for breakfast and to say our last goodbyes to Lee, Chris, Duncan and lucy and all the others at Monkey Republic then before Georgie started crying we jumped into a tuk tuk and went to the bus station, still half pissed and hanging in the roaring sunshine we waited for our bus to Pnom Penh for about 15 minutes. We opted for the cheaper second class buss and instantly regretted it! Although the seats were comfy enough and the aircon was vicious we were joined by a Japanese choir who sang (rather nicely I should add) for the entire 4 hour journey! Georgie and I had headphones so we could get a break from the heavenly bunch before it drove us mad. The journey was really nice and the scenery passing by was gorgeous with cloud topped hills and lush greenery as far as the eye can see but the stop we made for food was as ever in a complete shithole…
Phnom Penh… The weather was beautiful and the place had a really nice feel to it, it was madness getting off the bus all the tuk tuk drivers were crowding around shouting to try and get someones attention and a guard was trying his best to keep them back a bit but there were far too many, I told one chap who was being pretty calm that if he gave me a few minutes to have a smoke and get our bags then ill come and find him and he did so off we headed down to the lakeside area in his banging old tuk tuk where a load of the girls from Monkey Republic were staying to find a room. Its alot more hectic in Phnom Penh than Bangkok even, but in a good way if there is such a thing. We arrived at the lakeside area which is a small street cramed with bars and guesthouses and had a quite nice feel about it but we were tired and needed a room so after seeing 4 of the dirtiest rooms we’ve ever seen we got back into our tuk tuk and went to Okay guesthouse near the riverside which had been recomended to us by Chris at Monkey. It also was a chaotic place but the rooms were cool, clean and comfortable so we dropped our bags and headed straight back out in our struggling tuk tuk to the Sora centre to buy a new camera.
We had a little wander around but it was all abit odd to be honest so we had some food and got on with the task at hand and picked up the exact camera we wanted for a pretty descent price, then went outside and found Mr Mengly and his poo poo tuk tuk and went back to the room to watch tv and get some much needed rest…
