Thanks to its illustrious history, Oxford is home to a great many works of art from some of the biggest names in the classical art world. You’ll find their work hanging in the Ashmolean and other traditional galleries. Everybody loves the old masters, but great art didn’t end in the 19th century. If you like your art shocking, new and cutting edge then you’ll find plenty of modern art to enjoy in Oxford.

Although you’ll certainly find examples of fine modern art in the more traditional galleries and museums, it’s in the city’s smaller galleries that the best of British modern art gets its chance to be seen. Here are the three best galleries for modern art in Oxford.

Modern Art Oxford. The name says it all really. Since opening in 1965 Modern Art Oxford has fearlessly beaten a path at the bleeding edge of the modern art movement. Modern Art Oxford keeps a dynamic collection of works from internationally renowned artists as well as the stars of tomorrow. From painting, to sculpture to video art, you’ll find a range of thought-provoking exhibitions when you visit. The gallery also plays host to a full calendar of events throughout the year, most of which are free to attend. With a café and gift shop onsite, you can take your time absorbing the works and take home something special to remember your visit.

Sarah Wiseman Gallery. As it’s located in the cosmopolitan area of Oxford known as Summertown, you’d expect this gallery to be vibrant and full of energy, and it is. Now in its 15th year, the Sarah Wiseman Gallery has become well-known for nurturing and helping new talent as well as exhibiting from some of the big hitters in the British contemporary art scene. The gallery also works closely with local organisations to arrange commissions and create installations at various sites across the city. A visit to the Sarah Wiseman Gallery is sure to unearth some new treasure.

Hemingway Art Gallery. Located just outside Oxford, Hemingway Art Gallery is rapidly getting a name for itself as one of the best contemporary art galleries around. Working closely with carefully selected artists, you’ll see some incredible works of art at the museum. There is also work for sale by the artists, so if you like what you see there’s the chance it could end up decorating your walls.

If you’re an art lover then you’ll find plenty to do in Oxford. From the classic to the modern, there’s something to please all tastes, but if you have a penchant for hunting out modern art then Oxford has a vibrant arts scene for you to explore. A visit to these galleries should slake your thirst for the shock of the new.
